Building Self Esteem--Doing it Right

3. Apr 2008 20:23, shahjee

Building Self Esteem can be a challenge. In my experience of conducting stress management programs and counseling for over 20 years, I found that roughly 99% of those I've worked with felt that they needed to improve self esteem. How could this be?

It's because most of us have been taught to base our self-worth on our accomplishments, skills, physique, financial worth and earnings, ability to help others… Little wonder then when we:

• lose skills because of injury;

• lose a close family member on whom we're very dependent;

• lose our financial nest egg because the stock market collapses;

• do poorly in a course of study;

• have a bad hair day; or

• don't live up to our own expectations...

we don't feel good about ourselves and our self esteem and self confidence are challenged. Ultimately, this may:
• jeopardize our health;

• jeopardize our emotional well being;

• set us up for failure mechanisms;

• have us constantly trying to impress others;

• lead to an identity crisis;

• contribute to suicide;

• cause chronic depression…

Why is it when there are so many programs available for building self esteem and building confidence that is there a tremendous shortage of those who have self esteem?

The answer is that if you analyze most programs, trainings, and techniques for building self esteem, you'll see that they actually create the path to easily put your self esteem self confidence in jeopardy with the first calamity that comes along in your life.

Five things you might want to know about building self esteem.

1. Many programs focus on having you to:

• Acquire skills.

• Accomplish achievements.

• Change you physical appearance.

• Develop a talent.

• Obtain additional education…

Building self esteem on something you can acquire can set you up for a big let down, life crisis, anxiety panic attack, and loss of self esteem because these things are not the essence of you but superficial. While you certainly will accomplish many things, when you build self worth the right way, you will never be at risk of losing your self esteem. While talents, skills, accomplishments and so on may come and go, you want your self esteem to be impenetrable.

2. Many programs emphasize affirmations. While affirmations are important, they can also be rejected or ineffective. One method of determining acceptance of a specific affirmation is through the use of a pendulum. It's simply to ask your subconscious mind if the affirmation is accepted or rejected while holding the pendulum over a chart with directions for "Yes" and "No." Sometimes it's simply a matter of rephrasing the affirmation.

3. Evaluate goal setting. Yes, many programs use the approach of setting and achieving goals to build self worth. While it's ok to have and achieve goals, goals in themselves can be a catch 22 in building self worth. Should you fall short of a particular goal, your self esteem is in jeopardy. While you may have and achieve many goals, your self esteem should not be dependent on them for life is more often about dealing with the plans that fall through than it is about making plans.

4. Many programs only educate the thinking conscious mind. This approach could take forever. The limbic (emotional brain) lags behind the reticular (thinking cognitive brain). When you choose a program, make sure that the program nurtures the emotional brain otherwise, the thinking brain gets smarter and you get simply frustrated because you just can't seem to put the material into action. The Program you use should have techniques to bring the emotional brain up to date to agree with the new information the thinking brain is receiving.

5. Few programs utilize the power of hypnosis and subliminal suggestions and those that do, may not tell you what the actual suggestions are and what's worse the suggestions may be counter productive. For instance, many use a suggestion such as, "I am not going to feel badly anymore." Because of how the brain processes words, this suggestion focuses on feeling badly and is therefore counter productive. Or they may use a complex suggestion which is useless because the subconscious doesn't process complex suggestions. Choose a program that utilizes hypnosis and make sure the program informs you of the specific subliminal suggestions.

For improving self esteem or building self esteem, it's important to observe (not criticize) the sources of your role models' self esteem. It's important to also observe (not criticize) where your self esteem has come from in the past, i.e. what makes you feel good about you and what you need to feel good about yourself. Thus you'll understand the psychology of self worth and the causes of low self esteem.

The next step in restoring self esteem and beating low self esteem is to meet your own best friend--you. It typical that we often think we are our own worst enemy. The fact is that you can be your own best friend.

Now, how do you handle emotions? I mean feelings of anger, uncertainty, confusion, frustration...? Self criticism in the past may have eroded your self esteem self confidence. You want to use negative emotional experiences to empower you in building self esteem through your experience of any emotion that life can throw your way.

Acknowledge your disappointments and your emotional reactions. Move through the emotional charge and use directional preference statements. Tell yourself that you want to:

• learn from the mistake.

• see the situation in from a different perspective.

• forget about it.

And that even though you may be unhappy, you still like yourself.

This is your formula for improving self esteem on a daily basis.

The Power of Repeated Words and Thoughts

1. Feb 2008 01:34, shahjee

Thinking is usually a mixture of words, sentences, mental images and sensations. Thoughts are visitors, who visit the central station of the mind. They come, stay a while, and then disappear, making space for other thoughts. Some of these thoughts stay longer, gain power, and affect the life of the person thinking them.

It seems that most people let thoughts connected with worries, fears, anger or unhappiness occupy their mind most of the time. They keep engaging their mind with inner conversation about negative situations and actions. This inner conversation eventually affects the subconscious mind, making it accept and take seriously the thoughts and ideas expressed in those inner conversations.

It is of vital importance to be careful of what goes into the subconscious mind. Words and thoughts that are repeated often get stronger by the repetitions, sink into the subconscious mind and affect the behavior, actions and reactions of the person involved.

The subconscious mind regards the words and thoughts that get lodged inside it as expressing and describing a real situation, and therefore endeavors to align the words and thoughts with reality. It works diligently to make these words and thoughts a reality in the life of the person saying or thinking them.

This means that if you often tell yourself that it is difficult or impossible to acquire money, the subconscious mind will accept your words and put obstacles in your way. If you keep telling yourself that you are rich, it will find ways to bring you opportunities to get rich, and push you towards taking advantage of these opportunities.

The thoughts that you express through your words shape your life. This is often done unconsciously, as few pay attention to their thoughts and the words they use while thinking, and let outside circumstances and situations determine what they think about. In this case there is no freedom. Here, the outside world affects the inner world.

If you consciously choose the thoughts, phrases and words that you repeat in your mind, your life will start to change. You will begin creating new situations and circumstances. You will be using the power of affirmations.

Affirmations are sentences that are repeated often during the day, and which sink into the subconscious mind, thereby releasing its enormous power to materialize the intention of the words and phrases in the outside world. This does not mean that every word you utter will bring results. In order to trigger the subconscious mind into action, the words have to be said with attention, intention and with feeling.

In order to obtain positive results, affirmations have to be phrased in positive words. Look at the following two sentences:

1. I am not weak anymore.

2. I am strong and powerful.

Though both sentences seem to express the same idea, but in different words, the first one is a negative sentence. It creates in the mind a mental image of weakness. This is wrong wording. The second sentence awakens in the mind a mental image of strength.

It is not enough to say an affirmation a few times, and then expect your life to change. More than this is necessary. It is important to affirm with attention, as well as with strong desire, faith and persistence. It is also important to choose the right affirmation for any specific situation. You need to feel comfortable with it; otherwise the affirmation may not work or may bring you something that you do not really want.

Affirmations can be used together with creative visualization, to strengthen it, and they can be used separately, on their own. They are of special importance for people who find it difficult to visualize. In this case they serve as a substitution to creative visualization.

Instead of repeating negative and useless words and phrases in the mind, you can choose positive words and phrases to help you build the life you want. By choosing your thoughts and words you exercise control over your life.

Here are a few affirmations:

- Day by day I am becoming happier and more satisfied.

- With every inhalation I am filling myself with happiness.

- Love is filling my life now.

- The power of the Cosmos is filling my life with love.

- A lot of money is flowing now into my life.

- The power of the Universal Mind is now filling my life with wealth.

- The powerful and vital energy of the Cosmos is flowing and filling my body and mind.

- Healing energy is constantly filling every cell of my body.

- I always stay calm and in control of myself, in every situation and in all circumstances.

- I am having a wonderful, happy and fascinating day.

Affirmations for Success- Achieving Success In Life

31. Dec 2007 07:02, shahjee

Affirmations for success when done consistently and properly are extremely effective in reprogramming and eliminating negative thinking. To win the game of life, one must not only work hard and smart but understand and master over the cogs and wheels behind the inner game of success.

Many people are too focused on only the outer game of success and thus failed to notice that their inner game is hindering their success. To put it simply, many people are subconsciously sabotaging their own success.

What is self-sabotage of the inner game? Within our subconscious mind hold limiting beliefs that hinders our success. Every step forward in inner game results in 2 steps backwards internally due to the many different reasons that might surface in their subconscious mind. To manage this self destruction, it is obviously crucial to regularly and I mean everyday, repeating affirmations for success.

You may ask so how does this thing called affirmations for success help? Well, firstly, you need to understand what are affirmations. Affirmations are strong positive statements in the present tense made aloud to communicate and send the desire message to the subconscious mind. Each time you send a positive message to your subconscious mind, your subconscious mind automatically builds image of success, health and happiness (depending on what you desire).

Here's an example of a success affirmation I use on a daily basis.

I am successful in each and single thing I do.

I give my 100% to whatever I do.

I am super productive.

I augment my income constantly.

I always have adequate money for everything I require.

I spend my money wisely.

You are free to use it but it would be best if you were to craft a set of positive affirmations that suit your circumstances.

And as you repeat your affirmations for success to influence and reprogram your subconscious mind, it is imperative that I remind you that manifestation of success does not happen without you putting effort in the physical world. Activity and effort is high priority. While you repeat your affirmations for success daily, remember this quote, "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might!" Do so and success won't be far away. Looking forward to hearing your success story!

How Can You Make Affirmations Work For You?

24. Dec 2007 23:20, shahjee

Everyone wants a better life, more money, more health and love in their life. A lot of people try to do better in life

But that is where it usually ends, because most of us have a “treadmill life”, which means we live from one hard working day to another, from one pay check to another, and most of us always are only one paycheck away from disaster.

Have you ever wondered about why this is so? Has this been your experience in life? There is a reason for this. There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who let life live THEM and then there are those who LIVE life!

It has to do with repetition and focus. We are just now learning what it really means to have the life we are all naturally desire, a life that was meant to be for all of us. Most people are thinking and “affirming” the things they DON’T want.

Anxiety, worry, and complaining are all a form of repetitive focus or affirmation. The truth about why most affirmations don’t work is because people focus on the number of times they are saying a particular word or phrase. But when it comes to their every day life, it’s more than just saying a word.

It’s about a combination of seeing, feeling, and thinking. That’s the secret to making affirmations work! What you think, see and feel inside of you makes all the difference in the world as to how your life plays out.

Everything in life goes through a cycle or a process. This means that just because you may have started to do positive affirmations for a few weeks or a few months, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll see instant results!

It didn’t take you a few weeks or months to get where you are now, and it won’t be just a few weeks or months to get where you want to be.

Most people want to increase money, health, love in their lives.

No doubt this is also your goal, and a great way to achieve this goal, is to do your daily affirmations. The following steps are keys to making your affirmations much more powerful than you may have done them previously.

1. Use pictures or physical objects – this should be a picture of the object or experience you want to realize in your life. You can also use object such as a toy car (if you are wanting to manifest a car). Some people have vision boards for their affirmations, others use pictures on their computer. Do what works best for you.

2. Get into the feeling of having it NOW – many people are stuck in the “one day I will get this” mode. Pretend for a half hour that you already have it now. It is a great boost to your spirits and you come out of that feeling thankful and inspired.

3. Be Creative – I use music with my affirmations at times. Others use candles or incense.

4. Stay Consistent – Personally, I do this almost every day for at least 45 minutes to an hour or two. My disclaimer is that this should be a fun and relaxing thing for you. If it starts to feel like a chore, you’re not doing it right. This should be a lifestyle and not something temporary. It should be a way of life for you.

These three steps are essential to making the affirmations work for you. Sometimes you can’t take out a whole hour alone to do your affirmations, but what about doing them while driving long stretches in your car? Or maybe while waiting at the doctors office, you could give yourself a short reminder of the intentions you have in your life mentally.

In the end, it’s not the affirmations that actually do anything, but it is YOU who makes things happen in your life. The affirmations are just a focusing tool that you can use to help you expand and harness the Law Of Attraction to attain health, wealth and love.

Your mental attitude is the result of your thoughts, beliefs and feelings and it constantly works and influences the world around you. You are doing affirmations all the time, whether you consciously realize this or not. These affirmations shape your whole existence. If you tell yourself something long enough, you start to believe it. Once you believe it strong enough, you start to do it. When you do it, you become it.
